Quarantine & Biosecurity

Importing goods into Australia means dealing with some of the strictest biosecurity regulations in the world. Get it wrong and your freight gets held up, inspected, treated or sent back at your expense. MACH1 takes this off your plate entirely, managing the quarantine and biosecurity clearance process so your goods move through the border smoothly and without surprises.

Our team understands the requirements inside out. We work directly with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to make sure every shipment meets Australian biosecurity standards before it becomes a problem. That means fewer delays, fewer unexpected costs, and less stress for you.

Why biosecurity compliance matters

Australia's geographic isolation has kept it free from many of the pests and diseases found elsewhere in the world. The biosecurity laws are designed to keep it that way. Every piece of imported cargo is subject to scrutiny, and the consequences of non-compliance range from costly treatment and fumigation through to seizure and destruction of goods, plus significant fines.

This applies to everything from raw materials and machinery to food products, timber packaging and even the containers themselves. If your freight contains soil, plant debris, timber with bark, or organic contamination of any kind, it will be flagged. Having someone who knows the system managing this process for you saves time, money and headaches.

What we handle

Import biosecurity clearance We manage the full biosecurity clearance process for imported goods, including lodging documentation with the Department of Agriculture, coordinating inspections, and arranging any required treatments such as fumigation, heat treatment or cleaning before your goods are released.

Container and packaging compliance Containers and packaging materials are a common source of biosecurity holdups. We make sure your containers meet packing declaration requirements and that timber packaging complies with ISPM-15 treatment standards. If there are issues, we deal with them before they cause delays.

BICON import conditions Different goods have different import conditions under Australia's Biosecurity Import Conditions system. We check the specific requirements for your cargo type before it ships, so there are no surprises when it arrives. This is especially important for food products, plant material, animal products and used machinery.

Quarantine treatments If your goods require treatment on arrival, we coordinate with approved treatment providers and DAFF-accredited facilities to get the process done quickly. This includes fumigation, irradiation, heat treatment and cleaning to the required standards.

Used machinery and equipment Importing used machinery into Australia is one of the most common areas where businesses get caught out. Machines need to be cleaned to Australian biosecurity standards before arrival, free of soil, plant material, animal contamination and hydraulic fluid residue. We manage the pre-shipment inspection requirements and coordinate cleaning at origin where possible to avoid costly delays at the Australian border.

Goods that commonly require biosecurity clearance

Food and agricultural products, timber and timber packaging, used machinery and vehicles, plant material and seeds, animal products and by-products, soil and sand samples, personal effects and household goods being imported, and any cargo with organic contamination or visible biological material.

If you're not sure whether your goods will need biosecurity clearance, the answer is probably yes. Talk to us early in the process and we'll check the requirements before you ship.

Why MACH1 for quarantine and biosecurity

We know the system Our team deals with Australian biosecurity regulations every day. We know what gets flagged, what gets through, and how to prepare your shipment so it clears without unnecessary delays.

Proactive, not reactive We check import conditions and compliance requirements before your goods leave origin, not after they arrive in Australia. Fixing problems overseas is almost always cheaper and faster than dealing with them at the border.

In-house customs integration Biosecurity clearance and customs clearance go hand in hand. Because we handle both in-house, there's no gap between the two processes. Your goods move from biosecurity release straight into customs clearance without waiting for a third party to pick up where we left off.

Direct communication Your account manager keeps you informed throughout the clearance process. If there's an inspection, a treatment requirement or a hold, you'll know about it immediately along with what we're doing to resolve it.
